Our selections include both electric and gas powered garden tillers.

Benefits of Garden Tillers

  • Vegetables and flowers grow better in soil that has been tilled prior to planting. Planted seeds have plenty of room to sprout in dirt that has been loosened by a garden tiller. The roots will also be able to expand and grow within the less compact ground.
  • The loose soil provided by garden tillers allows air, rain water and fertilizer to absorb into the ground and get to the plant’s roots where it is needed. Hard ground will not allow these important nutrients to get down to the roots.
  • Garden tillers provide a faster and more efficient method of maintaining your garden throughout the growing season. One of the main enemies of vegetables and flowers is those pesky weeds. Unless you just enjoy using a hoe or pulling weeds by hand, garden tillers can be used to easily dig up those weeds by the roots.

Garden Tillers Quick Selection

Garden tillers come in a variety of sizes, styles and gas or electric power so selecting one can be quite a task unless you have some idea of want you want or need.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when making your selection. You can find more information in our Garden Tillers Buying Guide.

Engine Size

The larger the engine size, the more power the machine will have. Gas powered garden tillers have engines rated by the number of cycles or cc. The 2-cycle engine is the smallest size and can be found on the mini tiller models like those made by Mantis. A 4-cycle engine makes for a more powerful machine. For those rated by cc, the higher the number, the more powerful the engine.

Size of Garden

The most important factor in determining which of the garden tillers to buy is the size of the garden or gardens you will be preparing and tending.

First, add up the square feet of all your gardens.

Smaller gardens of 1,500 square feet or less can usually be maintained with a mini tiller that typically falls into the $300 to $400 price range.

Medium size gardens in the range of 1,500 to 5,000 square feet can usually be managed by one of the mid-sized, 5 or 6 horsepower garden tillers falling in the $500 to $800 range.

Large gardens of more than 5,000 square feet should be maintained with a large, 6 horsepower machine which will cost $800 to $2,000 or more.

Soil Type

If your soil is naturally loose, less powered garden tillers may work great for your area. On the other hand, if your ground is harder or includes clay, you will probably need a little larger machine than normal.

Rear or Front Tines

The majority of the garden tillers today have rear tines. This means that the cutting tines or blades are located behind the wheels. A front tine machine has the wheels in back and the tines in front. Rear tined tillers are easier to handle and are much safer.

Electric or Gas Powered

Electric garden tillers are becoming more popular out of convenience. It is easier to plug in a machine instead of having to fill a gas engine with gas and pull a string to get it started.

Tilling Width

The width of your garden rows may be a factor in determining the size you need. Mini tillers usually have a tilling width of around nine inches. The larger garden tillers have a tilling width of 14, 16 or 20 inches.

Expected Use

If you intend to till ground that has not been plowed, you will need one of the larger garden tillers to break the ground. Smaller garden tillers can be used to kill weeds and keep the ground loose between rows while your plants are growing. You may find that you may need a mini tiller and a larger one to get all your jobs completed throughout the season.

Price
For many of us, price is an important decision factor. When it comes to most things, you really do get what you pay for. I would get one of the best garden tillers that I could afford.
